Pourquoi, depuis les grottes de Lascaux jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nos jours, en passant par Giotto, Chardin, Corot, Monet, Rotko, l\u2019homme n\u2019a cess\u00e9 d\u2019avoir ce d\u00e9sir de repr\u00e9senter le r\u00e9el. Pourquoi les mus\u00e9es, pourquoi l\u2019art? Avant de vous faire part de mon exp\u00e9rience d\u2019artiste et de son rapport \u00e0 ma foi catholique, interrogeons-nous : \u00ab\u00a0<em>Qu\u2019est-ce que l\u2019art ? \u00bb<\/em><\/p><p>L\u2019artisanat, les beaux-arts et l\u2019art sacr\u00e9 participent du m\u00eame radical \u00ab\u00a0art\u00a0\u00bb. En philosophie traditionnelle, cela d\u00e9signe la transformation introduite dans la mati\u00e8re. Ce qui a une vis\u00e9e utilitaire est commun\u00e9ment appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0artisanat\u00a0\u00bb, les beaux-arts cherchant davantage la beaut\u00e9 pour elle-m\u00eame, sans la lier \u00e0 une quelconque utilisation (pas m\u00eame la d\u00e9coration). L\u2019art sacr\u00e9 est le plus souvent compris comme un art repr\u00e9sentant, par exemple, des sujets aidant au culte, \u00e0 la cat\u00e9ch\u00e8se, \u00e0 l\u2019embellissement des \u00e9glises. \u00c0 mon sens, l\u2019art n\u2019est pas \u00ab\u00a0sacr\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb parce qu\u2019il repr\u00e9sente un personnage ou une sc\u00e8ne biblique, ni m\u00eame parce qu\u2019il est destin\u00e9 au mur d\u2019une \u00e9glise. Cela ne suffit pas. Combien, par exemple, de vaines repr\u00e9sentations du Christ \u00e0 Geths\u00e9mani nous laissent perplexes, lors m\u00eame qu\u2019un tableau de Van Gogh nous introduit imm\u00e9diatement dans ce myst\u00e8re d\u2019abandon, d\u2019ob\u00e9issance et de supplication. Le peintre hollandais semble vouloir nous placer \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur m\u00eame de la vision d\u2019angoisse. Il est, sous les esp\u00e8ces du profane, des \u0153uvres profond\u00e9ment religieuses et il est bon d\u2019y faire attention. Des \u00e9tudes montrent que plus les \u00e9glises se vident, plus les mus\u00e9es se remplissent. Les gens pressentent dans l\u2019art quelque chose de sacr\u00e9. L\u2019art n\u2019est pas une technique qui v\u00e9hicule un concept. C\u2019est, par l\u2019artiste, l\u2019enfouissement d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience dans la mati\u00e8re. Exp\u00e9rience que face \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre, chacun pourra revivre \u00e0 la mesure de son attention, de sa sensibilit\u00e9, et parfois de sa foi. Il est \u00e0 chacun de juger de la nature de cette exp\u00e9rience. Je crois que la distinction entre \u00ab\u00a0les beaux-arts\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019art sacr\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb se doit d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9finie en fonction de la nature de cette exp\u00e9rience. Nourrit-elle ma foi, mon esp\u00e9rance, ma charit\u00e9 ?<\/p><p>L\u2019exp\u00e9rience que l\u2019artiste propose \u00e0 travers son travail est d\u00e9pendante de la source \u00e0 laquelle ce dernier puise son inspiration. Pour ma part, le point de d\u00e9part a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9tonnement face \u00e0 un objet pr\u00e9sent. Saint Thomas d\u2019Aquin nous dit que Dieu a \u00e9crit deux livres, le premier est la cr\u00e9ation, le second, son fils. Chercher \u00e0 dire v\u00e9ritablement quelque chose du myst\u00e8re de la cr\u00e9ation, c\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0, d\u2019une certaine mani\u00e8re, de l\u2019art sacr\u00e9. Quelques pommes, quelques citrons, quelques oranges, n\u2019est-ce pas d\u00e9j\u00e0 des paroles prononc\u00e9es par Dieu, maintenues \u00e0 chaque instant par Lui dans l\u2019existence ? Ce grand livre qu\u2019est la cr\u00e9ation se lit toujours au pr\u00e9sent. Il est une dimension trinitaire m\u00eame dans un seul brin d\u2019herbe.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Le monde n\u2019est pas vide; enfant, cela nous \u00e9tonnait. Adulte, cela nous semble banal, pu\u00e9ril, insignifiant. Cependant, l\u2019insistance demeure, le monde n\u2019est pas vide; il y a l\u00e0, devant moi, ce brin d\u2019herbe dont je ne suis pas l\u2019origine. Il pourrait ne pas \u00eatre l\u00e0, mais il y est! Cette pr\u00e9sence \u00ab\u00a0brute\u00a0\u00bb, per\u00e7ue avant toute analyse, nous r\u00e9v\u00e8le quelque chose du P\u00e8re. Elle est ! C\u2019est une pr\u00e9sence qui s\u2019affirme comme fondement incontournable. Mais ce n\u2019est pas tout, je peux percevoir qu\u2019elle est \u00ab\u00a0ainsi\u00a0\u00bb\u2026 Elle est verte, avec telle forme souple, l\u00e9g\u00e8rement rugueuse\u2026 Une face absorbe la lumi\u00e8re, une autre la rejette\u2026 Ce n\u2019est plus seulement une pr\u00e9sence, c\u2019est aussi une parole qui r\u00e9v\u00e8le un sens, une possible intelligibilit\u00e9 \u00e9crite dans la chair. Ce\u00a0<em>logos<\/em>\u00a0au coeur de la mati\u00e8re r\u00e9v\u00e8le, me semble t-il, quelque chose du visage du Fils. Puis vient l\u2019\u00e9vidence de l\u2019unit\u00e9 ind\u00e9chiffrable entre \u00ab\u00a0l\u2019\u00eatre per\u00e7u\u00a0\u00bb dans le \u00ab\u00a0ceci concret\u00a0\u00bb. L\u2019insondable profondeur qu\u2019ouvre le vivant constat : \u00ab\u00a0ceci est\u00a0\u00bb est l\u2019exp\u00e9rience d\u2019un gouffre. J\u2019ose penser qu\u2019elle est celle de l\u2019Esprit Saint. De cela, un brin d\u2019herbe observ\u00e9, na\u00eet un \u00e9tonnement et une curiosit\u00e9 qui conduisent \u00e0 entrer en relation avec le monde per\u00e7u comme pr\u00e9sence intelligible du myst\u00e8re. Dieu seul cr\u00e9e \u00ab\u00a0<em>ex nihilo \u00bb<\/em>, l\u2019artiste ne fait que s\u2019affronter \u00e0 cette r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et essaye de ramener tant bien que mal quelques oeuvres de ce combat. C\u2019est pour cela que contrairement aux id\u00e9es re\u00e7ues, les artistes sont peut-\u00eatre les hommes les plus s\u00e9rieux au monde. \u00c0 l\u2019heure o\u00f9 une guerre sans merci se d\u00e9clare de plus en plus ouvertement contre le r\u00e9el, ils demeurent l\u00e0, dans le creuset de cette relation. Ils regardent le monde dans sa finalit\u00e9 et t\u00e2chent d\u2019y ordonner l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine.<\/p><p>Dire cela, c\u2019est dire que l\u2019art puise dans le donn\u00e9 objectif, (dans ce donn\u00e9 que je ne choisis pas, cr\u00e9\u00e9 par un autre que moi), une substance empreinte de sens et de bont\u00e9. Cette substance, d\u00e9routante et jamais totalement atteinte, j\u2019aime l\u2019appeler LA BEAUT\u00c9.<\/p><p>Voil\u00e0 presque 10 ans que je passe mes journ\u00e9es entour\u00e9 de quelques l\u00e9gumes, de quelques fruits, parfois de fleurs. Ils sont comme une ancre \u00e0 ce monde mouvant, une porte vers le visage qui les prononce. Voil\u00e0 presque 10 ans que j\u2019essaye, par tous les subterfuges dont un artiste est capable, de r\u00e9p\u00e9ter ce qu\u2019ils me disent, par toute la force de ma foi, d\u2019ouvrir cette porte au plus grand nombre. J\u2019ai conscience de tout juste balbutier, d\u2019\u00e0 peine entrer dans cette grammaire \u00e9tonnante qu\u2019est le r\u00e9el. Cependant, tenir chaque jour devant l\u2019objet dans cette conscience-l\u00e0 et essayer de le nommer est une des exp\u00e9riences les plus f\u00e9condes de ma vie. J\u2019ai pass\u00e9 des ann\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la philosophie, des ann\u00e9es \u00e0 apprendre la peinture, et tout cela me semble seulement s\u2019ordonner \u00e0 saisir quelque chose du miracle de la simple pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019objet -un citron, quelques navets- dans le monde. Cependant, cela ne m\u2019appara\u00eet pas \u00eatre du temps perdu ou mal employ\u00e9. Le temps, je ne le vois pas passer. J\u2019entre dans mon atelier comme j\u2019entre dans une chapelle, un lieu mis \u00e0 part entre le monde et Dieu, un lieu pour l\u2019\u00e9couter, parfois l\u2019entendre, et peut-\u00eatre, en dire quelque chose.
