d\u2019\u00eatre de l\u2019art du roman. Pour ce faire, l\u2019auteur regarde l\u2019histoire \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re de quelques romans incontournables et scrute ce qui est propre \u00e0 cet art litt\u00e9raire. Au d\u00e9but de l\u2019essai, il d\u00e9voile avec force et certitude un principe qu\u2019il est s\u00fbrement bon, en tant qu\u2019artiste et amateur d\u2019art, d\u2019avoir \u00e0 l\u2019esprit.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>Imaginons un compositeur contemporain ayant \u00e9crit une sonate qui, par sa forme, ses harmonies, ses m\u00e9lodies, ressemblerait \u00e0 celles de Beethoven<\/em>\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_1\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Imaginez m\u00eame une \u0153uvre compos\u00e9e comme un chef d\u2019\u0153uvre du grand Ludwig! Comment cette pi\u00e8ce extraordinaire serait-elle re\u00e7ue par le public aujourd\u2019hui ? Pensez-vous qu\u2019un seul critique crierait \u00ab\u00a0chef d\u2019\u0153uvre !\u00a0\u00bb Qu\u2019un seul m\u00e9lomane s\u2019exclamerait : \u00ab\u00a0Un nouveau Beethoven est n\u00e9 !\u00a0\u00bb Il n\u2019en serait rien\u2026 Kundera affirme que cette \u0153uvre<em>\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0pr\u00eaterait \u00e0 rire. Au mieux, on applaudirait son auteur comme un virtuose du pastiche<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><p>L\u2019auteur nous interroge : Qu\u2019est-ce \u00e0 dire ? \u00ab\u00a0<em>La sensation de beaut\u00e9 au lieu d\u2019\u00eatre spontan\u00e9e, dict\u00e9e par notre sensibilit\u00e9, est donc c\u00e9r\u00e9brale, conditionn\u00e9e par la conscience d\u2019une date<\/em>\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0N\u2019y a-t-il pas l\u00e0 une \u00e9norme hypocrisie ? La beaut\u00e9 n\u2019est-elle qu\u2019un effet de mode ? Pourtant, ce qui est beau un jour n\u2019est-il pas beau toujours?<\/p><p>C\u2019est avec un grand r\u00e9alisme que Kundera poursuit son analyse. \u00ab\u00a0<em>On n\u2019y peut rien<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, dit-il \u00ab\u00a0<em>la conscience historique est \u00e0 tel point inh\u00e9rente \u00e0 notre perception de l\u2019art que cet anachronisme (une \u0153uvre de Beethoven dat\u00e9e d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui) serait spontan\u00e9ment (\u00e0 savoir sans aucune hypocrisie) ressenti comme ridicule, faux, incongru, voire monstrueux.<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Il synth\u00e9tise enfin sa d\u00e9monstration en quelques mots qui signent, il me semble, un grand principe : \u00ab\u00a0<strong><em>Notre conscience de la continuit\u00e9 est si forte qu\u2019elle intervient dans la perception de chaque \u0153uvre d\u2019art<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_5\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><p>J\u2019aimerai doubler cette affirmation par la r\u00e9flexion d\u2019un peintre devenu incontournable. Lorsqu\u2019un journaliste demande \u00e0 Francis Bacon ce qui, pour lui, est essentiel \u00e0 l\u2019artiste peintre, le d\u00e9j\u00e0 c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Anglais r\u00e9pond sans h\u00e9sitation qu\u2019en premier lieu, c\u2019est la connaissance de l\u2019histoire de la peinture. Il aurait pu parler de technique, de regard, de sensibilit\u00e9, de passion\u2026. Il d\u00e9signe cette \u00ab\u00a0<em>conscience de la continuit\u00e9 \u00bb<\/em>. Le peintre, qui sans cesse a affirm\u00e9 que \u00ab\u00a0<em>le travail de l\u2019artiste est de de toujours sonder le myst\u00e8re \u00bb<\/em>, est conscient que cela ne peut se faire qu\u2019en lien avec son temps et comme, tenant par la main, tous ses pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs. De m\u00eame qu\u2019un surfeur glisse en \u00e9quilibre sur la cr\u00eate mouvante de la vague,\u00a0<strong>l\u2019affirmation de la pr\u00e9sence \u00e9tonnante de l\u2019\u00eatre dans le monde est le fil rouge qui tisse toute l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art<\/strong>. C\u2019est sur cette br\u00e8che que l\u2019artiste risque sa vie, son \u0153uvre ; \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9coute de cette myst\u00e9rieuse pr\u00e9sence qui dit le monde \u00e0 chaque instant, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9coute de ce qui s\u2019affirme comme la seule chose \u00e0 en valoir la peine.<\/p><p>\u00ab\u00a0<em>La v\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0(\u2026)\u00a0<em>se distingue de tout ce qui s\u2019offre g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, sans valeur int\u00e9ressante, par la force avec laquelle elle s\u2019annonce et se met en \u00e9vidence, par sa mani\u00e8re d\u2019accuser puissamment l\u2019\u00eatre l\u00e0 de l\u2019existence.<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_6\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><p>Au travers l\u2019histoire toujours b\u00e9gayante, c\u2019est de l\u2019\u00e9vidence de cette exp\u00e9rience que vit l\u2019art. C\u2019est cette pr\u00e9sence que cherche l\u2019artiste, et cette rencontre reconnaissable entre toutes se fait toujours dans l\u2019instant pr\u00e9sent.<br \/>\u00ab\u00a0<em>Cependant\u00a0<strong>tout le poids de cette pr\u00e9sence ne devient manifeste que si l\u2019on prend acte de sa mobilit\u00e9 de circulation entre le pass\u00e9 et le futur. La pr\u00e9sence se donne, en effet, comme ce qui est toujours en train d\u2019arriver<\/strong>. (\u2026) Cette propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de tomber pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment toujours \u00e0 l\u2019instant constitue son orientation interne vers le futur<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_7\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0. Le pr\u00e9sent de l\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9borde le pr\u00e9sent.<\/p><p>Parce qu\u2019engendr\u00e9 par une totalit\u00e9, la \u00ab\u00a0<em>conscience de la continuit\u00e9<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb (qui s\u2019inscrit dans un temps lin\u00e9aire, la conscience historique) pourrait \u00eatre entendue dans l\u2019ordre du myst\u00e8re sous cet angle : la conscience de la totalit\u00e9. Le chef d\u2019\u0153uvre, cette \u00ab\u00a0<em>pr\u00e9sence toujours en train d\u2019arriver<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb saisie et offerte, s\u2019inscrit \u00e0 sa place dans un tout. Unique, il ne peut \u00eatre r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9 sans aussit\u00f4t \u00eatre d\u00e9masqu\u00e9. Ce \u00ab\u00a0<em>fragment d\u2019\u00eatre \u00bb<\/em>, redis \u00e0 l\u2019identique, m\u00eame copi\u00e9 parfaitement sous une forme artistique sensible, devient un mensonge, un non-pr\u00e9sent, une inf\u00e9condit\u00e9 n\u2019ouvrant pas vers le futur.<\/p><p>Tout cela interroge la notion de \u00ab\u00a0progr\u00e8s\u00a0\u00bb en art. Entre les fresques de Giotto et les tableaux de Rothko\u00a0<strong>peut-on parler d\u2019un quelconque \u00ab\u00a0progr\u00e8s\u00a0\u00bb artistique<\/strong>\u00a0? Milan Kundera nous livre son \u00e9clairage : \u00ab\u00a0<em>Appliqu\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019art, la notion d\u2019histoire n\u2019a rien \u00e0 voir avec le progr\u00e8s ; elle n\u2019implique pas un perfectionnement, une am\u00e9lioration, une mont\u00e9e ; elle ressemble \u00e0 un voyage entrepris pour explorer des terres inconnues et les inscrire sur une carte<\/em>.\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_42855_1_8\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><p>Il est des \u0153uvres qui atteignent et d\u2019autres qui n\u2019atteignent pas. Certains affirment davantage l\u2019\u00e9lan qu\u2019un lieu sur une terre inconnue, d\u2019autres semblent trouver leur place d\u2019un seul coup et s\u2019y installer pour toujours. (D\u2019autres encore, semblent ne pas m\u00eame avoir conscience du voyage \u00e0 entreprendre.) Contrairement \u00e0 la science qui avance sur une logique de progr\u00e8s, (un nouveau vaccin annihile le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent s\u2019il est plus efficace), les \u0153uvres abouties demeurent et s\u2019\u00e9clairent les unes les autres. Si l\u2019I Phone XI rend obsol\u00e8te une grande partie de ses pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseurs, Arv\u00f6 Part ne nous fait remiser ni Shubert, ni Rachmaninov. La pl\u00e9nitude, que chacun a su trouver, s\u2019offre toujours.\u00a0<strong>L\u2019\u00e9tincelle de beaut\u00e9 d\u00e9couverte ne s\u2019efface pas \u00e0 l\u2019arriv\u00e9e d\u2019un nouveau chef d\u2019\u0153uvre<\/strong>. Plus que l\u2019histoire socio-politique qui toujours b\u00e9gaye, l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art donne sens. Elle le fait parce qu\u2019elle \u00ab\u00a0inscrit sur une carte\u00a0\u00bb des points de correspondance avec ce qui est le plus pr\u00e9cieux pour l\u2019homme, ses croisements avec l\u2019infini, l\u2019affirmation d\u2019une pl\u00e9nitude pr\u00e9sente et accessible \u00e0 chacun. Tel le \u00ab\u00a0JE\u00a0\u00bb, qui d\u00e9signe ma personne, subsiste au travers les \u00e2ges de ma vie,\u00a0<strong>l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art demeure et affirme notre correspondance avec le myst\u00e8re lors m\u00eame que les grands \u00e9v\u00e9nements du monde se r\u00e9p\u00e8tent et s\u2019empilent. Il semble m\u00eame parfois, que ces derniers ne sont que pour permettre l\u2019affirmation toujours plus consciente de l\u2019 \u00ab \u00eatre l\u00e0 de l\u2019existence\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Dire cela c\u2019est dire que l\u2019art ne proc\u00e8de pas de la robotique, de la statistique ou de quelque calcul que ce soit ; il ne se \u00ab\u00a0fabrique\u00a0\u00bb pas. La tradition n\u2019est pas un pass\u00e9 plus ou moins \u00e9teint \u00e0 partir duquel on pourrait d\u00e9duire une avant-garde. L\u2019art ne trouve pas sa place, non plus, dans la nostalgie ; fut-elle inspir\u00e9e par les plus grands courants pass\u00e9s. Je ne crois pas pour autant qu\u2019il faille confondre les modes avec les grands carrefours de l\u2019histoire de l\u2019art, le plus souvent \u00e0 vis\u00e9es mercantiles, elles durent le temps que br\u00fble la paille qui les nourrit. L\u2019art ne trouve pas non plus d\u2019affinit\u00e9 dans l\u2019id\u00e9ologie qui voudrait le contraindre et le restreindre \u00e0 ses vues toujours int\u00e9ress\u00e9es.<\/p><p>Les choix qui font na\u00eetre l\u2019art dans le monde sont imp\u00e9rieux, radicaux, ils s\u2019inscrivent dans le pr\u00e9sent de l\u2019artiste. Ce dernier subit l\u2019\u00e9treinte de son \u00e9poque. C\u2019est un terreau qui a sa part dans la naissance de l\u2019\u0153uvre. La r\u00e9alisation d\u2019une \u0153uvre est une chose extr\u00eamement concr\u00e8te, et ce pragmatisme oblige \u00e0 des choix qui semblent toujours des fondations. Ils sont de l\u2019ordre de ceux qui s\u00e9parent la nuit et le jour, le ciel et l\u2019eau, l\u2019eau et la terre\u2026 Rien ne peut \u00eatre deux choses \u00e0 la fois. Il n\u2019est pas de place ici pour le compromis. L\u2019\u0153uvre r\u00e9clame l\u2019intime, elle veut n\u2019\u00eatre saisie que pour elle-m\u00eame,\u00a0<strong>le myst\u00e8re ne tol\u00e8re d\u2019\u00eatre choisi qu\u2019enti\u00e8rement<\/strong>. C\u2019est un chemin sur lequel il est possible de se perdre d\u2019un coup ; mais lorsque le temps est venu, la porte peut elle aussi, je crois, s\u2019ouvrir en un instant\u2026<\/p><div
