class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[1]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00bb Marc Rothko interroge : \u00ab Quelle est l\u2019image populaire de l\u2019artiste ? Glanez un millier de descriptions et vous obtiendrez au total le portrait d\u2019un cr\u00e9tin : il est r\u00e9put\u00e9 pu\u00e9ril, irresponsable, ignare ou nigaud dans la vie quotidienne. \u00bb<\/em><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>L\u2019analyse du grand peintre am\u00e9ricain est toujours d\u2019actualit\u00e9, et n\u2019est pas \u00e0 remettre en cause. Il me semble cependant qu\u2019elle doit \u00eatre compl\u00e9t\u00e9e par son pendant tout aussi extr\u00eame : l\u2019artiste est souvent, par ceux pour qui l\u2019art est un absolu, plac\u00e9 \u00e0 la droite de Dieu, voire, \u00e0 sa place sur le tr\u00f4ne divin.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>De m\u00eame que nos journ\u00e9es vacillent entre d\u00e9pression et toute puissance sit\u00f4t que nous ne nous constituons plus devant la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 d\u2019un infini pr\u00e9sent, balancer ainsi l\u2019artiste d\u2019un extr\u00eame \u00e0 l\u2019autre signifie ne pas savoir lui assigner sa place. Cette impuissance \u00e0 d\u00e9signer \u00ab ce qu\u2019est un artiste \u00bb\u00a0 n\u2019est qu\u2019une cons\u00e9quence du fait que nous avons perdu la juste place de l\u2019activit\u00e9 artistique et de son prolongement naturel, l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Nous avons tous \u00e9t\u00e9 choqu\u00e9s, ne serait-ce que confus\u00e9ment, lorsque pour ob\u00e9ir aux principes id\u00e9ologiques qui dictent leurs actes, des guerriers de l\u2019E.I ont d\u00e9truit des statues mill\u00e9naires dans le mus\u00e9e de Mossoul en Irak. Nous ne l\u2019avons pas \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 cause de la valeur marchande de ces objets d\u2019art, ni m\u00eame \u00e0 cause de leur raret\u00e9 ou de leur anciennet\u00e9. Nous l\u2019avons \u00e9t\u00e9 par ce que ces statues incarnaient le chemin d\u2019un peuple vers sa lib\u00e9ration. Les \u0153uvres d\u00e9truites \u00e9taient le t\u00e9moignage concret que de tout temps et en tout lieu l\u2019homme tend \u00e0 plus grand que lui, adh\u00e8re \u00e0 ce qui lui donne sens.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>L\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art donne sens \u00e0 l\u2019histoire parce qu\u2019elle est ce qui signe, en un lieu et \u00e0 une \u00e9poque, l\u2019effort des hommes pour avancer vers un absolu auquel ils ne peuvent pas renoncer sans renoncer \u00e0 eux-m\u00eames. Ce besoin structurel \u00e0 affirmer toujours plus profond\u00e9ment et v\u00e9ritablement ce \u00ab je ensemble\u00bb, d\u2019incarner cette aspiration commune \u00e0 un moment de l\u2019histoire, ce \u00ab nous \u00bb est ce que nous appelons \u00ab la culture \u00bb. Le g\u00e9nie, il en est si peu par si\u00e8cle, n\u2019est-il pas cet homme qui incarne dans un chef d\u2019\u0153uvre l\u2019aspiration commune de tout un peuple, une \u0153uvre en laquelle chacun peut se reconnaitre ? L\u2019histoire de l\u2019art ne peut pas \u00eatre s\u00e9par\u00e9e de l\u2019Histoire. Comme la berge, le lit et la rivi\u00e8re sinuent ensemble, l\u2019histoire de la pens\u00e9e, du salut et de l\u2019art sont une m\u00eame r\u00e9alit\u00e9. La culture est une saisie de relation, le puissant t\u00e9moignage de l\u2019existence des peuples, de leur diversit\u00e9, de leur unicit\u00e9, de leur compl\u00e9mentarit\u00e9. Il est bon de prendre conscience qu\u2019en Occident, bien que diff\u00e9remment, la culture est \u00e9galement attaqu\u00e9e sauvagement par les forces conjointes de la finance et du march\u00e9. Laisser faire cela \u00e9quivaut \u00e0 renoncer \u00e0 une souverainet\u00e9 essentielle \u00e0 sa survie.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>W. Churchill l\u2019avait bien compris. Alors qu\u2019on lui demandait de sacrifier au budget de la culture pour satisfaire \u00e0 l\u2019effort de guerre, le courageux homme politique r\u00e9pondit : \u00ab Mais alors, pourquoi faisons-nous la guerre ? \u00bb<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Eriger l\u2019art en absolu, c\u2019est dire qu\u2019il apporte toutes les r\u00e9ponses aux questions existentielles que la raison se pose. Mais affirmer cela est un mensonge, une pr\u00e9somption (qui elle, touche \u00e0 l\u2019absolu) : m\u00eame si l\u2019art est l\u2019expression la plus haute du d\u00e9sir que l\u2019homme a de \u00ab la vraie vie \u00bb, il n\u2019\u00e9puise pas toutes les demandes du c\u0153ur de l\u2019homme. Il ne saurait correspondre \u00e0 la totalit\u00e9 des exigences de pr\u00e9sence et de sens dont nous sommes tous constitu\u00e9s. Il faut bien l\u2019avouer, s\u2019il n\u2019y avait pour unique r\u00e9ponse, \u00e0 cette soif qui tisse ma personne, que \u00ab la Pieta \u00bb de Michelangelo, la nuit \u00e9toil\u00e9e de Van Gogh, ou les \u0153uvres compl\u00e8tes d\u2019Arvo P\u00e4rt, cela ne me suffirait pas : une grande part de moi-m\u00eame demeurerait dans l\u2019absurde et la solitude. Autrement dit, si l\u2019art est \u00ab le sacrement de la beaut\u00e9\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36527_1_2\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00bb il n\u2019en est que le sacrement. S\u2019il r\u00e9alise effectivement ce qu\u2019il signifie, il ne peut cependant contenir l\u2019essence de la beaut\u00e9, la totalit\u00e9 de la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, la source de la bont\u00e9.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>L\u2019art n\u2019est pas une fin en soi qui exclurait toutes les autres. Mal comprise, la formule \u00ab L\u2019art pour l\u2019art \u00bb enferme la discipline dans une maison close. Ne pouvant plus regarder par la fen\u00eatre pour dire la beaut\u00e9 qui jaillit de la lumi\u00e8re, il ne reste plus \u00e0 l\u2019artiste qu\u2019\u00e0 parler de son nombril, vendre son nombril, le vendre au plus offrant, le vendre toujours et le vendre encore. Le vendre uniquement, triste destin\u00e9e\u2026<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>L\u2019homme ne peut renoncer \u00e0 la qu\u00eate de l\u2019absolu. L\u2019art est la figure qui signe cette qu\u00eate essentielle. Il n\u2019en est pas le terme. Il est un \u00e9veil \u00e0 l\u2019homme qui dort, une nourriture \u00e0 l\u2019homme qui cherche, une confirmation qu\u2019il est bien Homme. L\u2019art n\u2019est pas un absolu, mais il est le chemin qui ne peut y renoncer.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Le chef d\u2019\u0153uvre d\u00e9voil\u00e9 se r\u00e9v\u00e8le comme une \u00e9vidence impr\u00e9vue. L\u2019art est un \u00e9v\u00e8nement. En cela il a la capacit\u00e9 d\u2019offrir, d\u2019une mani\u00e8re imm\u00e9diate, une certitude existentielle. Si la beaut\u00e9 doit sauver le monde, c\u2019est que cette imm\u00e9diatet\u00e9 a le pouvoir d\u2019introduire une dynamique de changement puissante et instante. Pourquoi ? Parce qu\u2019elle met en face d\u2019une \u00ab Pr\u00e9sence Autre \u00bb vers laquelle il vaut la peine d\u2019orienter toute sa vie.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Cr\u00e9er une \u0153uvre, c\u2019est ins\u00e9rer dans la mati\u00e8re la r\u00e9solution inattendue et sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent d\u2019un besoin \u00e9ternellement familier\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36527_1_3\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[3]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0. \u00c0 celui qui en fait l\u2019exp\u00e9rience, cela ressemble \u00e0 une intrusion soudaine d\u2019un essentiel enfin per\u00e7u : l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art offre une lib\u00e9ration inattendue. \u00ab\u00a0<em>Qu\u2019est-ce que finalement contempler une \u0153uvre d\u2019art et entrer dans son rythme, sinon rejoindre la source de l\u2019Eternelle Beaut\u00e9 (\u2026) Et qu\u2019est-ce que la Beaut\u00e9 \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 (\u2026) sinon cette Pr\u00e9sence cette Vie, cette Personne, cette Pl\u00e9nitude infinie, ce myst\u00e8re de silence avec lequel l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art nous \u00e9tablit en communion ?<\/em>\u00a0<span class=\"footnote_referrer\"><a tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><sup id=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_36527_1_4\" class=\"footnote_plugin_tooltip_text\">[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>L\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019art est un \u00e9v\u00e8nement parce qu\u2019elle na\u00eet \u00e0 chaque instant d\u2019un \u00e9v\u00e8nement plus grand encore. Elle est fille du Myst\u00e8re qui anime toute vie. L\u2019art est par nature ouvert \u00e0 plus grand que lui. De cette ouverture il re\u00e7oit sa forme. L\u2019artiste doit dispara\u00eetre derri\u00e8re son \u0153uvre pour qu\u2019elle puisse na\u00eetre. L\u2019oeuvre doit dispara\u00eetre derri\u00e8re elle-m\u00eame pour que naisse l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nement. L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nement est l\u2019irruption de la Beaut\u00e9 dans le monde. Se substituer \u00e0 cet absolu c\u2019est introduire un d\u00e9sordre dans le monde !<\/div><div><span style=\"font-size: 16px; letter-spacing: 0.2px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div><div>Au soir de sa vie et au d\u00e9but d\u2019un si\u00e8cle, Balthus avait bien compris les enjeux de son temps. Le peintre vivant, qui alors vendait les tableaux les plus chers au monde, affirmait tranquillement \u00e0 une journaliste : \u00ab Je ne suis pas un artiste. Les artistes ont tu\u00e9 la peinture \u00e0 force de pr\u00e9tentions.
